METS 6, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS — R.A. Dickey continued to enhance his bid to become the first knuckleballer to win a Cy Young Award on Wednesday, allowing two runs in 6-2/3 innings to defeat St. Louis, 6-2.

Ike Davis' three-run home run the fifth inning, his 26th of the year, provided Dickey with more than enough run support.

With the win, Dickey, 37, improved to 18-4, and lowered his earned run average one-hundredth of a run, from 2.64 to 2.63.

Dickey's closest competition for the Cy Young, air max 2012 Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto, is 17-7, 2.58 ERA, and 149 strikeouts. Phil Niekro, Joe Niekro and Wilbur Wood have all finished second in Cy Young voting, the closest a knuckleballer has come to earning that distinction.
