A spokesman for Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun responded today to a Free Press report that the UAW and Moroun are in discussions about a quid-pro-quo deal that would promise UAW support for Moroun’s anti-bridge Proposal 6 in exchange for infusing cash into the union’s campaign to enshrine collective bargaining in the state constitution.
The group backing Moroun’s Proposal 6, The People Should Decide, issued a statement today that did not deny the Free Press report but expressed a familiar theme that Gov. Rick Snyder’s New International Trade Crossing planned for about two miles down river from the Ambassador would cost Michigan taxpayers billions in unintended costs.
“I'll leave the rumors and speculation to the unnamed sources in recent press coverage,” Mickey Blashfield, director of The People Should Decide and director of government relations for Moroun’s Detroit International Bridge Company said in a statement. “Air Max 95Despite the rhetoric from bridge proponents, the economic benefits for Michigan are entirely unclear-at a time while our economy remains fragile and our fiscal future remains uncertain.”
Proposal 2, backed by unions, asks Michigan voters on Nov. 6 to enshrine collective-bargaining rights into the state constitution. Proposal 6, backed by Manual “Matty” Moroun and his family, would require a statewide vote before Michigan could spend money on international bridges and tunnels. It aims to prolong the Moroun family’s monopoly on Detroit River bridge crossings.
UAW spokeswoman Michele Martin said Thursday that the UAW has not taken a position on Proposal 6.
“We are still studying the issue and when we make a decision, we will make an announcement,” Martin said.
