--SS Starlin Castro, who has been struggling at the plate, walked, singled and hit a two-run double. He also was thrown out on the bases after falling for a decoy by the Reds' infield. Manager Dale Sveum said he would talk to Castro about the gaffe and that Castro might sit out Saturday's game. Castro has been prone to mental errors since coming to the big leagues in May 2010. "I'll think about it," Sveum said of sitting Castro.

--RHP Justin Germano took the loss, falling to 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA. He gave up seven hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings. Four of the runs were earned as the Cubs committed five errors while Germano was in the game. "It was a tough game all-around for everybody," he said.

--C Steve Clevenger said he apologized to manager Dale Sveum after getting ejected from Thursday night's game. Umpire Jeff Nelson tossed Clevenger, Cheap Nike Air Maxwho was upset about what he perceived as the ump's inconsistency. In fact, he was tossed after complaining about a pitch called a ball while he was batting. "Dale is right," Clevenger said. "I can't get ejected in that situation. I went up and apologized to Dale last night for getting ejected and said it won't happen again, can't happen. I thought the ball was outside, and the next pitch was the same exact pitch, I thought. He called it a ball. I said, 'You can't hit like that.' You don't know when he's going to call a strike and when he's going to call a ball."

--C Welington Castillo continues to angle for the bulk of playing time behind the plate. He had the first multi-double game of his career, with two. Each double drove in a run. Castillo has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.

--LF Alfonso Soriano drove in three runs with a groundout and a double. He is the team leader in RBI (69) and has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games.

BY THE NUMBERS

5 -- Errors committed by Cubs fielders Friday. That's the most by the Cubs since Sept. 12, 2006, when they made six errors against the Dodgers.
