Great Britain took a step closer to competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics following a thrilling 2-1 victory over hosts Japan in a pre-Games qualification tournament.

Britain, Olympic champions in 1936 and bronze medallists in 1924, have not qualified for the Games - to be held in Sochi, Russia, in two years' time - since 1948.

But they progressed to final qualification next February after topping Group J in Nikko having bounced back from a penalty shots loss to South Korea in their opening game to beat Romania and then the hosts Japan.

Craig Peacock gave GB the lead on the powerplay at 9.59 and 30 seconds later Ben O'Connor maintained his record of scoring in every game.

Shuhei Kuji grabbed a goal back for Japan at 44.01 and GB  Real Jordans on salehad to kill a penalty for the final 101 seconds and then survive a two-man disadvantage after the hosts pulled their netminder before celebrating the win.

GB are likely to travel to Germany for the final qualifying tournament but they could be placed in a group being held in Denmark or Latvia depending on the outcome of other pre-qualification groups.

Coach Tony Hand said: "This is a huge moment in the history of British ice hockey. I am so proud of every one of these guys and so should everyone back home be.

"We have proved we can compete at this level and now we want to prove we can compete at a higher level.

"Every single guy played their heart out and we did this with talent and determination.

"No one should underestimate how much this means to British ice hockey. It is massive.

"We are one step away from Sochi 2014 and now get to test ourselves against some of the world's best hockey nations."

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has hit back at the club's critics and defended their accusation of inappropriate language against referee Mark Clattenburg.

Buck is bemused by the reaction the club have received from some quarters following Chelsea's complaint that Clattenburg made an inappropriate comment to midfielder John Obi Mikel during the Premier League defeat to Manchester United last month.

The club has been criticised by some for pursuing the complaint following the defeat, in which Clattenburg made a couple of controversial decisions that went against Chelsea.

Buck insists the club were obliged to pursue the issue and it did not make them 'hypocrites' after their captain John Terry was found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.

"The reaction has been very unfair," he told the Evening Standard.cheap air max shoes "We weren't interested in any confrontation with the referee or anybody else, had no thoughts of revenge on the referee.

"I felt we had the moral high ground, so I didn't really feel that bad about the defeat or have that feeling in my stomach. I thought we'd be treated very kindly in the newspapers next day.

"Suppose we had tried to sweep this under the rug and said to the various players, 'Look, it's not a big deal and the press are going to be all over us, maybe you want to reconsider.' If that had leaked out, we would've really been crucified.

"The press seem to juxtapose 'our support' of John Terry and what's going on here and looking at us as being a bit hypocritical.

"We have to divorce the John Terry situation from this. From our perspective, the latest situation was pretty straightforward.

"We have an obligation to report what may be misconduct. We did that, in good faith and not maliciously.

"We were guided by obligations that are imposed by the Football Association and also as an employer. FA rule E14 basically says a participant shall immediately report to the association any incident or matter which may be considered to be a misconduct."

He added: "Misconduct is a defined term under the FA regulations and includes such racial behaviour. We also had to consider the Equality Act 2010, which imposes an obligation on an employer to take certain actions if an employee is subject to discrimination by third parties."

Buck insists that Terry's influence at Stamford Bridge is overestimated but admits there have been numerous incidents involving the skipper.

He said: "We have a duty of care to John Terry in loco parentis. Not that, if he did something wrong, we weren't going to say he didn't do anything wrong. But we have to support him as a person. That's different from saying that, no matter what Terry does, we approve.

"I can't argue with the fact that, over the last 10 years, there have been a lot of public incidents in which Terry and Chelsea were involved. But I don't accept that we have something in our hearts that says we're going to chase the referees. It's just not like that at all, honest.

"Chelsea are not run by John Terry. I don't know how I can prove it to you but it's not true. My club is run by Roman Abramovich."

Australian Lleyton Hewitt has announced he has no plans to call time on his career next year, as he is already looking ahead to the Australian Open in 2014.

After overcoming a foot injury that threatened to end his career, the former world number one said he felt fresh both physically and mentally.

When he was asked whether his appearance at the Australian Open in January would be his last, the 31-year-old said: "I seriously doubt it.

"I'd say I'll be back again. I'm playing all next year. I can't see myself getting to the Paris indoors and not the Australian Open a month later."

The 2005 Australian Open finalist was speaking at a promotion jordans shoes for sale for the AAMI Classic. He plans to use this as part of his preparation for the opening grand slam of 2013 at Melbourne Park.

Hewitt said he was hopeful of a favourable draw but had not set any targets for the tournament.

The world number 78 added: "I'm not putting results on the table or goals to get to certain rounds.

"I've had some rough draws in the past. Hopefully I can ease myself back into the Australian Open.

"Brisbane, I'm playing at for the first time, and then coming here to Kooyong, where I've always played well whether it's the AAMI Classic or the Davis Cup."

Lifting spirits

Having gone down to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Melbourne Park this year, Hewitt battled through a Davis Cup tie against China two weeks later before undergoing surgery on a troublesome toe.

At the French Open in May, he returned to action and said a recent victory at the Valencia Open over Argentinian world number 12 Juan Monaco had lifted his spirits.

Hewitt said: "I didn't know exactly how I was going to bounce back from the surgery.

"It was such a major surgery that no other athlete has had it and tried to come back and play competitive sport again. There were a lot of unknowns for me.

"I can't see myself getting to the Paris indoors and not the Australian Open a month later.

"

Lleyton Hewitt Quotes of the week

"By the end of the year I played some really good tennis and knocked off a couple of top 30 players. That gave me a lot of confidence that I can still go out and match it with the best players in the world."

Hewitt explained that he felt no pain in his foot, yet was at a loss to explain what motivates him to continue playing.

He said: "I don't know. Maybe I just love punishment.

"Davis Cup and grand slams are still the priority for me. In terms of grand slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon are the two that I love playing and mean the most to me.

"When I finally do stop they're the two tournaments I'll miss for sure, but at the moment I'm still hungry to go out there and do the hard work. I enjoy it.

"I guess when you bounce back from five surgeries in the last four years, I feel ready to go out there and compete."

Injuries to defensive players have caused problems for Chip Kelly and Oregon, and the head coach is coming up with creative solutions. Star wide receiver and running back De’Anthony Thomas may be featured at defensive back in the Ducks’ upcoming game against Stanford. Adam Jude of The Oregonian reported that Thomas has spent time in the secondary during practice in the past, and quoted an unnamed source saying that he or she “would not be surprised” if Thomas played defense. Jude also notes that safeties Avery Patterson and John Boyett are out for the year, while cornerbacks Troy Hill and Dior Mathis are struggling with injuries. The Ducks rose to the No. 2 spot in the BCS Rankings this week after they defeated California 59-17, and Alabama was upset by Texas A&M. Oregon has a difficult remaining schedule, with games against No. 16 Stanford and No. 13 Oregon State to finish out its season. If Kelly can lead his team to victory in both contests, the team is all but guaranteed a spot in the national championship game. This is why the coach may ask Thomas to contribute on defense, in addition to his duties cheap air max shoes on offense and special teams. In his sophomore season, Thomas has continued to show why he is one of the most explosive athletes in the nation. He has averaged 7.9 yards per carry out of the backfield while recording 521 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He has also caught 37 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas has scored once during his return duties this year as well. His speed, quickness and vision are all elite and he can surely use his physical gifts to be effective on defense. Thomas’ ability to play on both sides of the ball will be yet another intriguing storyline in the upcoming showdown between Oregon and Stanford.

At the time, Tottenham's late deadline-day swoop for Fulham and American midfielder Clint Dempsey seemed like an act of sheer brilliance. By hijacking the deal from Liverpool, Spurs left a potential threat to its top-four pursuit reeling. Further, the modest£8 million transfer fee seemed a bargain for the fourth-highest scorer in the 2011-12 Premier League season. On the American side of the spectrum, the deal allowed Dempsey, one of the US national team's most important players heading forward in its World Cup pursuit, to get even more experience in upper-echelon matches. It all seemed so promising. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months and 11 Premier League matches to today and the outlook has all changed. Through seven appearances, Dempsey has failed to really stand out for the club. Fans of the American might point to his two goals, each of which were road match-winners (against Manchester United and Southampton), but even those were mere tap-ins off the back of his teammates' good work. Before Sunday's match with Manchester City, a slight discontent could be sensed from Spurs supporters who wanted more from their (not-so-) new signing. Then came perhaps the most lackadaisical performance yet from "Deuce," as he completely failed to show up against City, sending Tottenham supporters into a frenzy. Real Jordans on saleThe best summary of Dempsey's performance actually came from my dad, a relatively new football fan. After being brought to the edge of his seat by the action, my dad called me in the 80th minute and asked, "Wait, Dempsey is playing?" Apparently, he didn't even realize this until the camera zoomed in on Clint late in the match. That pretty much says it all. Jamie McDonald/Getty Images So the question becomes clear: What should Tottenham do with Dempsey? The question has become a polarizing one.Since the end of Sunday's match, upset Spurs fans have made their feelings all too clear. Some want Dempsey benched, others go so far as asking for his transfer come January. On the other hand, fans of the US team have defended Clint, wanting Tottenham to stick with its man for fear of the impact his dropping might have on the national side. So let's analyze every option for Spurs. Obviously, an option is to keep Dempsey as a starter and look to grind out his poor form. In some senses, this makes sense. After all, Spurs don't have the greatest options behind him, what with Gylfi Sigurdsson in similarly poor form and a second striker representing a change in systems. However, there is a clear risk of Dempsey not coming out of the slump, which would cost his side dearly. Another possibility is for Tottenham to drop Dempsey and let him work out his problems on the training ground and in lesser competitions (i.e. FA Cup, Europa League). Perhaps Sigurdsson could find his form or Andre Villas-Boas could adapt his tactics to fit two strikers. However, these raise almost as many question marks as are created by Dempsey. Finally, the club could just give up on the American, put him on the transfer block come January and get a new face in the window. This is of course appealing given the excitement of getting a new face in the door. However, it's tough to expect a deal with a top attacking midfielder in a January transfer window. So what should Spurs do? What should Spurs do with Dempsey? What should Spurs do with Dempsey? Keep starting him33.0% Bench him43.9% Sell him in January23.2% Total votes: 358 This is a tough one for me. I really don't like the idea of selling Clint in January. I doubt Tottenham would be able to get much in and I think it would be far too early to give up on a signing. I am really intrigued by a Jermain Defoe-Emmanuel Adebayor partnership up top, but that is up to AVB. From the other options, it comes down to what you think is plaguing Dempsey. Perhaps it's that he still isn't familiar enough with his teammates, but I'm more inclined to believe that Spurs' fast style just doesn't suit him. To me, I would sit Clint for Sigurdsson and let him earn back his first-team spot. Let's just hope he finds his feet from there, or he may be out the door come next summer. Cody Rhodes is in trouble, as far as his career as a singles wrestler goes. Rhodes is having a blast as a member of Rhodes Scholars with Damien Sandow and additionally, they are helping reinvent the tag-team division. Does that sound familiar: Cody Rhodes in a successful tag team? Rhodes’ success as a tag-team wrestler started under the tutelage of Hardcore Holly. Both were tag-team champions in 2007. Rhodes then turned on Holly and became champions with Ted Dibiase Jr. They formed the “Priceless” tag team, which then morphed into “Legacy” after joining with Randy Orton. They never won the tag titles under “Legacy,” but they were still a force to be reckoned with. Rhodes didn’t stop winning the tag titles. He briefly held the tag titles with Drew McIntyre after winning a tag-team turmoil match from the Hart Dynasty. Rhodes shouldn’t be in this spot, but for some reason, he is. He’s been successful as a midcarder. He held the Intercontinental title from August to April of this year. Rhodes also won the title again after defeating the Big Show at Extreme Rules. Since his second reign, Rhodes has floundered. With nothing to do, Rhodes joined forces with Sandow. They aren’t champions yet, but they are still in the forefront to take the tag-team championship from Kane and Daniel Bryan. Success shouldn’t be argued in the short term. jordans shoes for cheapThe long term could provide ramifications for the second-generation superstar. Rhodes already is a tag-team superstar. He shouldn’t be stuck there for his career. How many times will we see Rhodes form another tag team to win the tag titles another time? It worked for Edge and Christian, who held tag-team titles after they split up. However, they moved on to win multiple world titles. Rhodes might not have that luck or opportunity. The current path Cody Rhodes is on is to stay as a tag-team superstar. There’s nothing wrong with that, if he chooses to go that route. But if he wants to be the man, then he needs to change that route. In the meantime, Rhodes Scholars is on a roll. He and Sandow have shown they can be a formidable tag team, bringing a natural chemistry to a rebuilding tag-team division. Cody Rhodes is enjoying this ride NOW, because in the future, he might not be.

Juan Martin Del Potro was delighted to gun down Roger Federer and reach the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals.

The Argentine knew that only a victory would guarantee his last four spot and he produced his best tennis when it mattered to win 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-3 and end Federer's 12-match winning run at the season-ending event.

"I'm so happy to beat Roger once again," said del Potro, who also handed the 17-time Grand Slam winner his only other indoor defeat in the last two years in the final of Federer's hometown tournament in Basle last month.

"I know he's the favourite for you," Del Potro told the O2 Arena crowd,Real Jordans on sale "but you are so respectful for me.

"I would like to say thankyou for cheering us both."

Federer had won 13 of the previous 16 meetings between the pair and the modest Del Potro said he needed some good fortune to seal victory.

"I was a little lucky towards the end of the match. Always when you beat these kinds of players you need luck on your side but I played well," he said.

"I took the break-point chances in the last set, then I served really well in the last game. I was very nervous but I closed out the match."

Del Potro's semi-final opponent will be either Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray, Saturday evening's final (dead-rubber) Group B match between David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic deciding which of Del Potro and Federer will top the standings.

"It's going to be a tough match against Djokovic or Murray, but I'm so excited to get into the semis," said Del Potro.

Federer disappointed

Federer said of his defeat: "It's disappointing. I had a good feeling going into the match, definitely the right game plan.

"It's indoor tennis, he has a big serve and all those things. But still I expect myself to get more returns into play.

"But it's important to move on right now. Mentally, it's important to look ahead and rest because it's a quick turnaround.

"I tried everything I could and was a bit frustrated at times, but it shouldn't affect me tomorrow."

Federer does not believe playing two days in a row will be a disadvantage for him or Del Potro, but admits that could become a factor if either makes it through to Monday's final.

The 31-year-old, meanwhile, admitted a major source of disappointment was that his defeat eliminated world number five Ferrer from the competition before his final match.

The Spaniard has been one of the players of the season, winning seven titles, the best on the ATP World Tour, and reaching the semi-finals at the French Open and US Open.

Federer added: "I was thinking more about David than I was thinking about Andy and Novak, to be honest. I really wanted to give him a chance and give myself the best possible preparation for the semis. I really hoped I could win.

"It's not that I prefer David over Juan Martin, not at all, but I think he's had a stellar season.

"It was a given I was going to give my very best. But I'm more disappointed for him than I am about losing today."
